FAQ
1. What is Scottish Country Dancing?#1-what-is-scottish-country-dancing
Scottish Country Dancing is a social form of traditional Scottish dance done in sets (groups) of couples. It features lively jigs, reels, and strathspeys, and emphasizes teamwork, rhythm, and fun.
2. Do I need experience to join?#2-do-i-need-experience-to-join
Not at all! Beginners are very welcome. Our classes include step-by-step instruction, and experienced dancers are there to guide you.
3. Do I need a partner?#3-do-i-need-a-partner
No partner is needed. We switch partners after each dance in class, so you’ll get to dance with many different people. As a beginner, you will always have an experienced dancer as your partner.
4. What should I wear?#4-what-should-i-wear
Wear comfortable clothes and soft-soled shoes you can move in. Many dancers eventually wear “ghillies” (Scottish dance shoes), but sneakers or ballet flats are great for beginners.
5. When and where are classes held?#5-when-and-where-are-classes-held
Classes are held every Tuesday from 6:45 to 9pm, with the beginner portion from 6:45 to 8:30pm and intermediate/advanced dances from 8:30 to 9pm. The location is 3415 Rue Redpath in Montreal with the nearest metro station being Guy Concordia. Please visit our Classes page for the current schedule, location, and fee details.

8. Are there social events too?#8-are-there-social-events-too
Yes! We host parties, demonstrations, and seasonal dances throughout the year. These are a great way to meet people and practice what you’ve learned. Upcoming events are posted on our Events page.
9. Can I learn both roles (traditionally “man” and “woman”)?#9-can-i-learn-both-roles-traditionally-man-and-woman
Absolutely. Scottish Country Dancing is danced in two lines, referred to as the men and women's lines traditionally. We encourage all dancers to learn both sides — it makes dancing more flexible, inclusive, and fun. While we mainly still use the traditional terms 'man' and 'woman' to describe dance roles, these are used irrespective of gender identity, and anyone is welcome to dance either role.
10. Is there an etiquette guide?#10-is-there-an-etiquette-guide
We strive to maintain a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for all dancers, regardless of background, or experience. Please respect others’ boundaries, ask which role they prefer (if unsure) when dancing, and prioritize safety, consent, and community care on and off the dance floor. For more information on etiquette, see: https://rscds.org/sites/default/files/scottish_country_dancing_dance_etiquette_poster.pdf.

12. Is it accessible to people with different physical abilities?#12-is-it-accessible-to-people-with-different-physical-abilities
We aim to be inclusive and adaptable. Please let us know if you have any mobility or health concerns — we’ll do our best to accommodate your needs.
